Winter Home Maintenance Tips
Whether you’re a new homeowner or have owned your current home for 20 years, making home maintenance in the winter months a priority is crucial. As one of the most unpredictable and damaging seasons, protecting your home can mean saving money and hours of frustration.
If you’re not sure where to start, give these winter maintenance tips a try!
Cover Air Conditioning Condensers
Located on the exterior of the home, covering your air conditioning condenser will help prevent dirt, leaves, and other debris from getting inside the unit. A build-up of debris can cause damage and corrosion to your unit, which will cause it to be less effective. When purchasing a cover, make sure it’s mold and mildew resistant and not airtight so moisture is able to evaporate.
Remove Screens from Windows
Window screens can be damaged from snow and ice build-up during winter storms and removing them and storing them inside for the winter will lengthen their lifespan. Screens can also reduce sunlight and with shorter days and less sunlight, letting in as much natural sunlight into your home as possible can make a big difference.
Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Cleaning your gutters and downspouts will allow water to drain properly and decrease the risk of ice dams. If your gutters don’t get cleaned, they can clog, and even if it’s not cold enough for water to freeze, the water can back up under your roof shingles and eaves.
Shut Off Outdoor Faucets
Avoid frozen and burst pipes by turning off and draining your outdoor faucets. This will help avoid any emergencies and expensive repair bills. To shut off your outdoor faucets, simply locate the indoor shutoff valve for each faucet and turn them off. Once off, open the faucets so they can drain any remaining water.
